Situated in the heart of Berkhamsted at 163-165 High Street, The Five Bells by Lussmanns offers a dining experience that delicately balances refined British cuisine with warm, welcoming hospitality. Renowned for embracing seasonality and sustainability, this stylish restaurant shines with fresh, thoughtfully prepared dishes that celebrate local ingredients.
The menu is a delightful showcase of flavor and creativity. Highlights include the tender and fresh cod lion, which guests often praise for its delicate texture, though some suggest pairing it with a lighter sauce during warmer days to enhance its natural freshness. For those exploring plant-based options, the king scallop oyster mushrooms serve as a standout vegan dish—rich, earthy, and deeply satisfying, reflecting the kitchen’s keen attention to detail.
Seafood lovers will appreciate the variety of dishes such as the smoky, well-balanced smoked trout, and the exquisitely presented potted crab. Meaty mains also receive accolades, from the robust, grass-fed steak cooked to perfection, to lamb bombas offering vibrant, hearty flavors. While a few dishes, like the smoked haddock, may occasionally veer toward a heavier flavor profile, the overall menu consistently delivers enticing, beautifully cooked plates that excite the palate.
The desserts provide a fitting finale, with the chocolate mousse earning particular praise for its rich decadence without being overpoweringly sweet, enhanced by a perfectly crunchy nut brittle. Sticky date pudding is another crowd-pleaser, offering warmth and comfort with every bite.

Diners have noted the attentive, friendly service—highlighted by team members like Kate and Anna—who create a personalized experience infused with genuine warmth and a touch of humor. We had a nice mother's day late lunch early dinner here. The vegan option (King scallop oyster mushrooms) was delicious and my daughter enjoyed the lamb bombas. I tried the smoked trout which nice and my son had the potted crab. Mains were a bit more hit and miss with my smoked haddock being spoiled because it was very salty and overwhelmed with a cream sauce. He poached egg on top however ever was perfect! Again the vegan flatbread option with fake lamb was nice and the cod cheeks and whole sole were delicious. We nearly passed on dessert but pleased we didn't because the lemon posset, sticky toffee pud, apple crumble and chocolate mousse were delicious too. The waiting staff were attentive. Book in advance at a weekend.
Nine of us dined (a late lunch) in the private dining room on the first floor. The team (gloriously international) were friendly, upbeat, patient and attentive. The food was attractive to look at, beautifully cooked and very tasty. We were not pressurised to leave and enjoyed nearly 4 hours of consummate hospitality.
Beautiful restaurant with Delicious food and very friendly service! A personal feedback on the main dish cod lion I had. the cod itself absolutely fresh tender and delicious but the sauce underneath feels a bit heavy to match with the cod as well summer weather.
Went to Lussmanns for lunch, it was a lovely meal, really good portions of food, from giant fishcakes, grass fed steak, and a lovely sole fish. Also my grandmother had the most amazing chocolate mousse. The most amazing part was the service from both Kate and Anna, they made the whole experience a pleasure, really exception service and with a nice sense of humour as well. It is nice to get his service when you go out, and both of them did just that so a big thanks to the staff at Lussmanns.
We had a delectable meal. Three of us opted for the two-course set, which comprised of a main and dessert. My sole was delicate and very enjoyable. My husband liked his steak, although his main criticism was that it was a bit small for him. The chocolate mousse was not overly sweet and the nut brittle added a nice crunch, but it did stick to your teeth a bit. MIL seemed to like her sticky date and ginger pudding, which had a strong ginger note to it. Service was friendly. We had a good experience.
A gem in the heart of Berkhamsted the food is excellent, friendly staff, and their lovely garden at the back is warmly welcoming you! Either two courses or three courses meals, it is value for money. Reservations in advance are always good because this place is quickly booked This evening we had our meals again at the Five Bells and I had a vegetarian meals, ‘mince lamb’ with pita bread. It was delicious..!!
We came for lunch and a cheeky cocktail each. Service was very welcoming, cocktails delicious and the food well prepared. My steak melted in the mouth and Ingrids linguine was very tasty. Well done Lussmanns!
